Amador A.E. Jones
TDH) – PHILIPSBURG–The Joint Court of Justice maintained the nine-year sentence meted out by the Court of First Instance against Kennedy C.A. Daniel (22) for involvement in the killing of Amador A.E. Jones (35) and illegal firearm possession.
Jones’ suspected killer, Omax B., is still to appear in Court, but his accomplice Daniel was also convicted for Jones’ murder by the Court of First Instance on June 27, 2012.
Jones was shot and killed on Gladiola Road near Under the Sun snack bar across from John Cooper/José Lake Ballpark, on April 16, 2011.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Jones was killed in retaliation for stealing 10 kilos of cocaine from the late restaurant owner Miguel Arrindell.
According to statements made to the Police, suspect Omax B., nicknamed “Mad Max,” had been hired for US $20,000 to kill Jones.
Following the Court of First Instance, the three judges of the Appeals Court also considered it proven that Daniel had made his motorbike available to Omax B. and that he had taken him to the scene of the crime. Telephone contact with B. was used as evidence of this, the Appeals Court stated in its ruling.
Daniel had denied any relationship with Omax B., and had also told the Appeals Court that he was innocent.
On behalf of the Prosecutor’s Office, Solicitor-General Taco Stein had asked the Appeals Court to uphold the verdict and sentence Daniel to nine years for complicity in murder and firearm possession.
In his pleadings, attorney-at-law Cor Merx had contested that his client had been involved in Jones’ murder and had requested an acquittal. The lawyer also had pointed out that no witness had seen his client at the scene of the crime or on the roads nearby.
The attorney said Daniel had confessed to firearm possession, and recommended that his client be sentenced for this crime with a punishment equal to his pre-trial detention of one year and five months.
