The United Kingdom (UK) Government on Wednesday announced new measures to ensure British Overseas Territories in the Caribbean have the support they need in the event of a repeat of the devastating hurricanes that hit the region last year.
The British Government said its departments “have been putting plans in place to bring together humanitarian, military support and diplomatic work under a joint unit coordinated by the Foreign Office”.
It said the Royal Fleet Auxilliary (RFA) Mounts Bay, a Navy ship deployed to the region since 2017, will remain in the vicinity of the Caribbean throughout the hurricane season this year and also for 2019.

Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has clarified the Government of Saint Lucia’s position on LIAT following reports carried by local and regional media that Saint Lucia will subsidise the airline. “We support LIAT as a regional airline and remain committed to seeing the necessary restructuring and some real change in operations at LIAT,” explained Prime Minister Chastanet. “We have been consistent in our position on LIAT in that we propose that the airline operate on a strictly commercial basis. We have not yet made a decision on subsidising LIAT. What we have agreed to is a meeting to discuss some of the issues relevant to the airline. ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Wednesday March 14, 2018 – Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell has announced that “significant gas and oil” have been found in the territorial waters of Grenada.

PHILIPSBURG – The Government of Sint Maarten and UNDP signed a project document outlining the support of UNDP towards the early recovery process in Sint Maarten. The project entails house repairs, clean-ups and repairs of community structures. The interventions are to be implemented in close cooperation with different government agencies through an employment generation approach, utilizing labour from the areas where house repairs and other works are being done. HILIPSBURG:— The CFT advised the Kingdom Council of Ministers to issue an instruction to the government of St. Maarten for the 2018 budget. A letter dated December 22nd, 2017 was sent to the chairlady of Parliament regarding the advice given by the CFT to the Kingdom Council of Ministers.
