“The government you elect is the government you deserve.”, said Thomas Jefferson
Dear Editor, As a guest and a democrat living in Sint Maarten, it may be useful to read an independent view of the country’s current challenges. Many local people have expressed their views through your newspaper, some treating the new challenges with humour, others angry that they “the people” have been badly let down by elected representatives, and it is difficult to disagree with any of the comments printed in your newspaper.
“The government you elect is the government you deserve.”, said Thomas Jefferson. “People deserve the government they get, and they deserve to get it good and hard”, said H.L. Mencken. So, yes, the people of a democracy are responsible for its government and its policies. Further, if those policies are atrocious, unfair, irrelevant, then the people of a state have the capacity to change those policies or that government. If they do nothing about it, then they should not complain when retribution ensues.
There is so much to admire in Sint Maarten, which is why so many people from so many countries live in harmony with each other here. People with skills that “Country Sint Maarten” desperately needs, people, who just want to work hard to keep and enjoy island life, people who have high standards of what is right and what is wrong.
As a democrat, I believe everyone in a country should have the right to vote, to the minority here in Sint Maarten with this precious gift, use it with pride next time and demand the highest standards of those you elect.
